Saffron

A child thinks a thought
Imagined you as black and white
No memories or experiences
To bring color into life

How far from ordinary you are
Blanketing us with your red, white and green
Imagination doesn’t live up to the reality
A world brushed with beautiful colors

Soil filled with life
The sun bathes you
A land as bold as saffron
Quenching thirst with roses

Roots so old
It stretches around the world
What wisdom you bring
With unshakeable ground

Cities filled with souls
As precious as their smile
A way of life
Founded years ago

Join me at the table
What’s mine is yours
Even if I get a crumb
We will share the bread

Lines on faces
Leaves trails of stories
Passed on from elders
Reborn every day

Look above, look above
Kites flying in the air
Strings attached to hope
It’s not leaving my hands

With every stroke of a note
A santur speaks words
Teach me a new language
Poems written with passion

A burning tea
Cooled down by life
The mountain of cubes crumble
Slipping through the hourglass

How deep you run through me
Covered in your colors
Never to be thought of as black and white
I am yours.
